17-year-old from Torrington critically injured in shooting outside New Haven church

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - A 17-year-old from Torrington is fighting for his life after being shot Friday morning outside a New Haven church. The shooting happened in front of Varick Memorial AME Church on Dixwell Avenue, around the corner from a police substation, as people headed to work and children walked to nearby schools. New Haven Police Chief David Zannelli said officers received a number of 911 calls along with a ShotSpotter activation alerting them to gunfire on Dixwell Avenue around 8:30 a.m. The victim is in critical condition after being shot in the head. Police blocked off Dixwell Avenue for roughly three hours as detectives collected evidence and took pictures.
