17 years after Vernon Allen shot and killed Joel LaFromboise, he says: 'I wish it never happened'
MOORHEAD — Vernon Allen has nightmares about the night he shot and killed Joel LaFromboise in 2009. “I am paranoid all the time about anybody sneaking up on me,” he recently claimed in an interview with Forum News Service. As a result of the shooting, Allen said he was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and has become a recluse, rarely venturing out of his apartment. “I just want to put this behind me and forget about it," said Allen, now 64 years old. "I still get the thoughts about hurting somebody; it’s hard to explain, but it’s like nightmares.” As part of its review of the 2009 shooting, Forum News Service spoke with Allen and several others, obtained documents from the Moorhead Police Department and Clay County Sheriff's Office through an open records request, and reviewed the video transcript of Allen's police interviews. Many of the details in the documents were heavily redacted. S., near Moorhead's Romkey Park, around midnight on June 19, 2009. LaFromboise had spent the evening playing basketball and drinking.
