Two people died Thursday evening in the crash of a small plane north of the Wrangell Mountains, authorities say. The crash occurred after the Piper Cub took off from a dirt airstrip in the Nabesna area, according to an online statement posted Friday by Alaska State Troopers, who said they were notified of the crash just before 8 p.m. Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff at an airstrip in the Snag Creek area, according to Millicent Hill, an aviation safety investigator and spokesperson for the NTSB Alaska region. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the flight was a commercial or private operation, Hill said.
