21 students hospitalized, 3 critical, after standing in heat during bomb threat evacuation

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRC) - Police said 21 students were hospitalized, with three in critical condition, with heat exhaustion after standing outside during a bomb threat evacuation. According to a release from the Knox County Rural Metro Fire Department and the Knox County Sheriff's Office , the Carter Middle School evacuated at 9:56 a.m. on September 4 after a "potential bomb threat" was found written on a bathroom wall. Students were sent to a football field while authorities searched the school. Roughly 50 to 55 minutes later, students were allowed back into the school. "Upon reentry, several students exhibited signs of heat-related illness," the sheriff's office wrote. "Various EMS units responded promptly to evaluate and provide care to those students." "Some students were treated in the field house next to the field and the majority were treated once back inside the building," the fire department said. "In all, 21 students were treated and transported with various degrees of heat exhaustion.
