3-year-old girl died in crash at intersection with blind spot, plans for a roundabout

A state route and local road intersecting in rural Adams County, surrounded by farmland and single-family homes. With no traffic lights, drivers can believe there’s no reason to slow down — until they crest a hill and realize there’s a blind spot at the intersection. Since 2019, there have been more than 30 reported crashes at the intersection in Reading Township, which prompted PennDOT to create plans for a roundabout to improve safety. But it’s years away, and in the meantime, crashes continue at Stoney Point and East Berlin roads (Route 234,) where the speed limits are 45 mph and 50 mph, respectively. A 3-year-old girl died after a crash at about 7:15 a.m. on May 9, when an unlicensed 19‑year‑old woman ran a stop sign at the intersection in a Nissan Sentra and collided with an eastbound pickup truck on Route 234. Police said a toddler, Dayana Gonzalez, was sitting unrestrained on her mother’s lap in the backseat of the Sentra when the car overturned. Two witnesses told troopers they found the 3-year-old unresponsive in the wreckage. She didn’t have a pulse and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 8 a.m. Claudia Ramos-Villeda was charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the crash. The fatal crash was among 31 at the intersection dating back 10 years, according to PennDOT data. Thirty of those crashes happened between 2019 and 2025.
