7 years after Wichita toddler’s death, jury convicts mom’s boyfriend of murder

Source Scout · The Wichita Eagle reports: A Sedgwick County jury on Wednesday convicted a Wichita man of murdering his girlfriend’s toddler seven years ago. Bernardo Gonzalez-Mejia, 38, was found guilty of first-degree murder, child abuse and aggravated child endangerment in the Sept. 29, 2019, death of 2-year-old Jacob Aviles . “Jurors returned the verdict after approximately 3 hours of deliberation following a 7-day trial before District Judge Eric Williams,” the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release announcing the verdict.
