Airports, firefighters prepare for incidents like cargo plane crash, experts say

The fatal crash of a cargo plane in Miami on Sunday is raising questions about how airports prepare for such incidents. Experts said airport officials prepare for a wide variety of emergency scenarios, including the possibility of a plane crashing off the runway and ending up beyond the airport perimeter. "It's a practicing situation. It's drilling," said aviation expert Tom Kinton, former director of the Massachusetts Port Authority. "It's putting it in your emergency plan and hope you never have to use it." He said for Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, that means working with fire departments and other communities around the airport, such as Londonderry. >> Beyond training, fire departments like Londonderry's say they keep in close contact with airport crews and visit often, especially with their new firefighters.
