A new bill headed to the U.S. Senate would require automakers to include a once-common feature in every new vehicle. The U.S. House recently passed the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. ” The act would require every new car and truck sold in America to come equipped with AM broadcast radio. Proponents of the bill say the inclusion of AM radio is critical to public safety. “AM radio is a lifeline. When the power goes out, when the cell towers go down, and when the Internet cuts off during a storm or an emergency, AM radio is often the only way families can get the life-saving information they need,” Rep. Josh Gottheimer , D-NJ. “It’s outrageous that some automakers want to rip out a basic, free feature — one that helps keep people safe — just to pad their own bottom line.” The bill would require AM radio services to be offered in vehicles without additional fees or subscriptions. More than 50 million Americans a year listen to broadcasts from the country’s 4,000 AM radio stations, according to a congressional fact sheet on the bill. The system is also utilized by the National Public Warning System which provides emergency alert and warning information during natural disasters, extreme weather conditions, chemical incidents, health emergencies and other domestic threats, often when cellular and internet networks fail.
