Atlantic hurricane season could break a historic record this week, and El Nino may be why

SAN ANTONIO — The contrast between the Pacific and Atlantic tropical seasons could hardly be more striking. As of early September, the eastern Pacific has produced 13 named storms, four hurricanes and two major hurricanes. In contrast, the Atlantic has produced just five named storms — Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly and Edouard — and not a single hurricane. That is an unusual split between the two basins, especially as we move into the climatological peak of Atlantic hurricane season. The lack of an Atlantic hurricane is becoming increasingly significant with every passing day.
