Augusta County schools under lockdown amid reports of active shooter in Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) - The suspect of a shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School on Wednesday morning is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a staff member was injured during the incident, police confirmed. At approximately 9:12 a.m. Wednesday, Waynesboro learned of a suspicious person at the school, who then forced entry, Waynesboro Police Chief David Shaw said in a Wednesday afternoon press conference. Police responded immediately and entered the building where they found the suspect dead inside the school library from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Shaw said.
