ALBUQUERQUEm N.M. – Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue received a $100,000 fire prevention grant to cut hazardous excess vegetation in the East Mountains and improve safety along evacuation routes. The New Mexico Counties Wildfire Risk Reduction Program awarded the grant. Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue said it will work with the Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District to break up overgrown vegetation in East Mountain communities. The county said crews plan to start the work this fall, but officials are still identifying the specific project locations. The county said the work aims to increase defensible space and improve safety along key evacuation corridors.
