Bernalillo County grant for wildfire risk reduction

Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue has been awarded $100,000 through the New Mexico Counties Wildfire Risk Reduction Program to expand wildfire mitigation efforts across the East Mountains. The funding will be used to reduce hazardous vegetation in areas considered vulnerable to wildfire, helping protect residents, homes, and critical infrastructure. Crews will focus on lowering fuel loads and creating defensible space in targeted communities. Officials are currently evaluating priority locations, with fieldwork expected to begin this fall. In addition to reducing wildfire intensity, the planned treatments aim to improve safety along key evacuation corridors, making it easier for residents and emergency responders to move during wildfire incidents.
