The evacuation order remains in place for the area of 23rd Street South between 1st Avenue South and 5th Avenue South in Birmingham due to continued unsafe air monitoring readings from the storm drains. The source of the release remains unknown; however, it is suspected that an unregistered underground tank may be the cause. Crews continue to vent the area to reduce the hazard. The City of Birmingham, Jefferson County EMA, and state partners continue working to identify the source of the fuel leak, render it safe, clean up any impacted areas, and return the affected area to normal.
