HAWAII — While the Atlantic hurricane season has been quiet, a second tropical system is threatening Hawaii this season. Three hurricanes are now churning in the eastern Pacific, with Hurricane Lowell potentially getting close to the islands early next week. The 5 pm EDT advisory from the National Hurricane Center had Lowell with winds of 140 mph, making it a powerful Category 4 major hurricane. Lowell is located south of the Hawaiian Islands and is moving westward. However, the hurricane is expected to make a big turn northward this weekend and move toward the western Hawaiian Islands.
