His family confirmed his death on social media, saying he had died unexpectedly just a day after completing the cycling feat alongside his grandson, Tom, as a fundraiser for motor neurone disease. Guardian Australia understands he died in a single-vehicle crash in Sydney’s southern suburb of Arncliffe about 7pm after a car crashed into the side of the M5 East tunnel. Emergency services treated him at the scene before he was taken to St George hospital in a critical condition, where he later died. A 79-year-old passenger was also treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
