City to open emergency assistance center for those impacted by Washington Park shooting

CHICAGO — The city of Chicago is opening an emergency assistance center on Tuesday to help those impacted by the deadly shooting in Washington Park over the weekend. Officers said they were already on the scene trying to disperse a crowd in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday when the gunshots rang out. According to police, one or more offenders began shooting into the crowd, striking 15 people. One of the victims, 35-year-old Rontonio Guterz, was killed. It remains unclear what led to the shooting or how many opened fire.
