A Des Moines man was sentenced to up to 55 years in prison Friday for offenses including a fatal shooting outside a strip club a year ago. Derico Derrell Lowery, 31, admitted shooting De’tavion Marques Levi, 28, saying he acted in self-defense. “I am deeply sorry for the pain that it has caused Levi’s family and my family,” he told the court. The defendant pleaded guilty in July of involuntary manslaughter and felon in possession of a firearm, both of which are class D felonies. A habitual offender enhancement on both counts increased the penalties to a total of 30 years, with a minimum of six years before Mr. Lowery is eligible for parole.
