The tornado that struck Detroit's east side the afternoon of Sept. 3 tore through a 3.5-mile path at a peak wind speed of 115 miles per hour over four minutes, according to a preliminary survey from the National Weather Service. The twister touched down along Hancock Road near Ellery Place, crossing East Forest Avenue before ripping along East Grand Boulevard at East Jefferson Avenue. The twister then traveled over the Detroit River to Belle Isle, where it made landfall east of the Belle Isle Boat House. It ended near the Model Yacht Basin where it reached the other side of the river, according to a report released by the weather service shortly after 9:30 p.m.
