FAA report reveals cause of Newport plane crash

A final report from the Federal Aviation Administration is giving insight into July's plane crash in Newport, where a pilot overran the runway. Investigators say the pilot was turning from the base leg of the traffic pattern when he heard another pilot report that they were on final approach to an intersecting runway. According to the report, the pilot immediately reduced his descent before resuming the landing attempt, which caused the final approach to be steeper than normal, and the pilot touched down with insufficient remaining runway. The plane crashed into nearby trees. The pilot suffered serious injuries, but survived the crash.
