Five things we learned about Wichita State basketball from Paul Mills
Paul Mills looked a little overdressed for a September basketball press conference. The Wichita State men’s basketball coach usually keeps it casual in a quarter-zip or T-shirt when talking hoops. On Thursday, a day after the Shockers held their first official team practice, he arrived in a suit jacket and dress shirt. He had spent the morning on calls with attorneys, trying to find out whether Kenyon Giles would be able to play for the Shockers this season. “It’s just been a really weird summer,” the Wichita State coach said. “You’re talking to attorneys more than you’re talking to coaches.” An Indiana court order Wednesday made Giles eligible to play again , welcome news for WSU. But Mills cautioned that the legal fight is far from over and said the Shockers might not have clarity on his eligibility until the new year. Over 35 minutes on Thursday, Mills offered a clearer picture of the Shockers as official practice begins. Here are the biggest takeaways on the Giles situation, the players sidelined by injuries and the newcomers and returners catching his eye. Wichita State’s online roster lists 15 players, the current roster limit, but Mills said only 14 are on scholarship. The Shockers kept one scholarship open in case Giles could return. Mills did not say which listed player is without one.
