From Tackle Cancer to cancer nurse: Former football player's medical journey inspired his career

"I want everyone that has to deal with an experience like that to always just know that there are people out there that give you that motivation and that will help you through those times," said Bonte, who is now an RN at Fairview Southdale Hospital, where he often works with cancer and hospice patients. "Working with our chemotherapy patient population, especially that first one, that was pretty pivotal for me," Bonte said. "Being able to watch somebody kind of go through the course of treatment and get to know them. Mike Richards, the physician at Children's Minnesota who diagnosed Bonte with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The surgery didn't slow down his pursuit of a new profession. Richards and his chemo nurse, Jon Matters.
