Gas leak caused by crash in South Euclid resolved; evacuation orders lifted

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — A natural gas leak that forced evacuations and road closures along Mayfield Road in South Euclid on Wednesday morning has been resolved, and all residents and businesses have been cleared to return, fire officials said. The leak occurred after a vehicle struck a traffic barrier and pushed it into an excavation area where natural gas work was underway, rupturing a gas line near the intersection of Mayfield and Plainfield roads, according to the South Euclid Fire Department. Firefighters, police officers and utility crews responded to the scene, establishing a safety perimeter and ordering evacuations in nearby neighborhoods and commercial areas because of elevated vapor readings and wind conditions. Emergency notifications were used to alert affected residents and businesses. Utility crews shut off the flow of gas to the damaged line at 10:25 a.m.
