Afzal says the officer chased down the suspect, as other arriving officers tried to help the victim. "As the officer turns around right at Smothers and Elm, the individual that the officer was pursuing turned around, and what the best I can describe is attempting to ambush an officer and discharge at least one round towards the officer," said Chief Afzal. "Then the individual then turned around, kept running around, and went onto the railway tracks heading west from Elm." He says the officer fired his weapon back at the suspect, with a brief back and forth between the two, according to body camera footage. No officers are injured, and at this time, investigators still need to identify the suspect. Afzal says at some point, the suspect falls, possibly from shots fired by the officer. "The individual the suspect went down, but kept shooting at the officer," said Afzal. "Additional officers arrived at the scene after a few minutes; the individual was taken into custody and was handcuffed, and a handgun was recovered from the suspect." He says the victim was taken to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.
