Greyhound station security guard to face grand jury in fatal shooting of passenger who tried to punch him

A security guard at the downtown Birmingham Greyhound Intermodal Facility had no right to fatally shoot a Georgia man who who tried to punch him, according to Jefferson County prosecutors. Christopher Jarrett, 46, of Bessemer, is charged with manslaughte r in the death of 46-year-old Angelo Hill Jr. The deadly shooting happened Sunday, April 26. Jarrett went before Jefferson Count District Judge Tanita Cain Wednesday for a preliminary hearing. Deputy District Attorney Nick Taggart said there is no doubt that Hill unsuccessfully tried to punch Jarrett, but said the law does not allow someone to introduce deadly force into a situation that would amount to third-degree attempted assault. “Obviously that’s why he was charged the way he was,” Taggart said, referring the manslaughter charge versus a murder charge.
