Heat executive leaves for Lakers, in rare basketball-operations departure

MIAMI — Decades of continuity have made the Miami Heat’s front office one of the most respected in the NBA. But that continuity also has a flip side, creating the potential need for career advancement elsewhere. That has become the case with Heat Vice President of Player Personnel Eric Amsler, who is moving on to the Los Angeles Lakers as an assistant general manager under Rob Pelinka, an NBA source confirmed Wednesday to the Sun Sentinel. Amsler is leaving the Heat after 22 years with the franchise, vacating his role also as general manager of the Heat’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. The Heat figure to continue with their ongoing continuity, with Keith Askins , a presence in the organization for 36 years, having been listed directly below Amsler in the team’s basketball-operations hierarchy, having spent the past 12 years overseeing the team’s scouting department and currently listed as the team’s director of college and pro scouting, serving under Amsler as assistant general manager of the Skyforce.
