Hero from Memorial Drive shooting response honored with 2026 Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery

Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11 attacks, an annual award for civilian bravery named for a Massachusetts woman was presented to a Marine veteran who jumped into action in May when a gunman opened fire on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. Madeline Amy Sweeney was a flight attendant on Flight 11. Before the plane hit the North Tower, the Acton mom called back to Logan Airport, reporting the seat numbers of the hijackers and other critical information. Her family and state leaders honor her memory by awarding the annual Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery, which highlights the actions of someone in New England.
