Hurricane Lowell nears Hawaii as the state’s third tropical threat in under a month

Forecast uncertainty remains, but Lowell is expected to pass near Hawaii’s western islands as a major hurricane, continuing an unusually active stretch of tropical activity for the state. Usually an invisible swirl of air, this passing dust devil became impossible to miss when it flung pool inflatables and furniture cushions skyward. A cluster of three hurricanes has formed in the central and eastern Pacific — areas primed for tropical activity by El Niño. Southeast Texas saw life-threatening flooding even as storm Edouard lost steam. Online speculation said “brown ocean effect” aided the rain, but the simpler explanation was right next door.
