Updated on: September 8, 2026 / 2:45 PM EDT / CBS News Hurricane Lowell weakened Tuesday while skirting western Hawaii, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, punishing waves and flash flooding, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm has also left tens of thousands of homes and businesses in the dark. The hurricane, now a Category 1 , had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph on Tuesday, after initially approaching the islands as a major Category 3 storm. It was expected to become a tropical storm later in the day. As of the latest advisory at 8 a.m.

Although a hurricane warning for Kauai County and a tropical storm warning for the island of Oahu were both discontinued as Lowell began to abate, the hurricane center said risks of flash flooding remained for the islands.
