Powerful Hurricane Lowell passed close to the Hawaiian Islands overnight, but its rain, power outages and other dangers could linger into Sept. Lowell is rushing off to the north at 15 mph and forecast to take a twisting path out to sea. The storm completed a dramatic right turn in recent days and is now expected to be jostled onto a westward track. Meanwhile, weather-related warnings remain in place in the islands, said Mike Brennan, the National Hurricane Center director. Conditions on Kauai are "very dangerous" and there are "widespread power outages," Brennan said, making a plea for post-storm safety during a YouTube briefing update on Lowell.
