In killing of New Orleans judge’s niece, ex-boyfriend found guilty of shooting her 19 times
Family members and loved ones of JohnShane Powell, 33, a domestic violence survivor who was murdered July 3, congregate outside City Hall for a march against domestic violence on Thursday, July 27. Johnshane “Nay” Powell writhed in pain on a 7th Ward street three years ago, shot 19 times. Her bones had shattered in a hail of bullets that flew from multiple directions. From the pavement, the 33-year-old mother of two daughters mustered up a final revelation, identifying her ex-boyfriend, Kelvin Atkins, as her assailant before she died in a New Orleans hospital. Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams raised a .40-caliber Glock pistol outfitted with a drum magazine Friday as he told jurors that Atkins, 39, used it to kill Powell in the 2400 block of New Orleans Street the night of July 3, 2023.

Last year’s conviction stemmed from a domestic violence incident two days before the killing in which police arrested Atkins after Powell told officer’s he’d slapped her, pulled her hair, bit her leg and stole a 9mm Beretta from her purse. "What happens if y'all let him go and I end up dead tomorrow,” she asked officers Atkins, a parolee, managed to make bail.
