Iowa City mayor responds to deadly police shooting
Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague is responding to Tuesday night’s deadly officer-involved shooting , calling the incident a tragedy and urging the community to allow an independent investigation to determine what happened. “Our community experienced a tragic event Tuesday evening that resulted in the loss of a life,” Teague said in a statement Wednesday. Teague said his thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who died, as well as the officers, witnesses and first responders involved. “A loss of life in our community is significant, and I know this incident may bring many emotions, concerns, and questions throughout Iowa City,” Teague said. The shooting happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Southgate Avenue. Iowa City police said officers responded to a report of a person armed with a knife and threatening others.
