Is your lawn wildfire-ready? Here’s what to know

According to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) , 43,145 fires have burned more than 4.5 million acres in the United States this year so far. And as a result, a lot of residents in wildfire-prone areas like California are starting to rethink how they fireproof their homes. According to a new LawnStarter report , about 2.5 million homes across 14 states — including California along with Colorado and Arizona — are at risk of wildfire damage. Community outreach manager for Fire Safe Marin in California, Jessamyn Hise, notes that a lot of the times, what makes a home vulnerable to fire damage is the little stuff around one’s lawn like “plants growing into eaves, wooden fences attached directly to the home, or debris tucked into the corners where no one thinks to look.” Therefore, the biggest part of ensuring your lawn is fire-resistant is making sure to get rid of any kind of path a wildfire can take to reach your house.
