‘It happened that quick’: Family mourns man killed in High Point house fire

The fire happened around 4:13 a.m. on Sept. High Point Fire Department officials said the first unit arrived about four minutes later, and crews had the fire under control by 4:51 a.m. Two people were taken to the hospital by Guilford County EMS.

Jones said Duff and Gainey had known each other since they were young, later reconnecting and marrying. “Them two together, they were meant for each other,” Jones said. “He always, always looked out for her.” Now, Jones said the family is focused on helping Gainey recover. “We’re gonna take care of her, we’re gonna help her as much as we can,” Jones said. “Just whatever it is she needs, we’re gonna do it.” Gainey’s son, AG, told WFMY News 2 on Friday that she had been moved out of the ICU but was still waiting to be discharged from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.
