JD Vance calls on EPA to independently investigate response to East Palestine train derailment

WASHINGTON — Vice President JD Vance joined U.S. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin on Friday in calling for an independent investigation into the Biden administration's handling of the disastrous 2023 train derailment East Palestine, Ohio . Vance and Zeldin made their request to the EPA Office of Inspector General as midterm elections are under way. To explain the timing 3 1/2 years after the fiery crash, they cited "troubling media reports" and new documents that have recently come to light. "No stone should be left unturned," they said. The EPA oversaw Norfolk Southern railroad's cleanup after the derailment, but residents questioned whether the agency did enough to ensure they were safe and shared everything known about the risks of being exposed to chemicals that were released and burned.
