HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - With the outer fringes of Hurricane Lowell reaching the islands, Kauaʻi County officials briefed the public Sunday afternoon on preparations, response, and impacts. The county was under a tropical storm warning with tropical storm conditions forecast to spread across Kauaʻi and Niʻihau by Monday afternoon. “For those of us that have been through Hurricane Iniki, this feels familiar, and for the folks that have been through it, we know how to get through it, and it’s by working together,” said Kauaʻi County Mayor Derek Kawakami. Refuge areas and evacuation options The county, in partnership with the American Red Cross, opened the following refuge areas ahead of Hurricane Lowell : Kīlauea Neighborhood Center located at 2460 Keneke Street in Kīlauea; Kapaʻa Middle School located at 4867 Olohena Road in Kapaʻa; Kauaʻi High School Gym located at 3577 Lala Road in Līhuʻe; Kalāheo Neighborhood Center located at 4480 Papalina Road in Kalāheo; Waimea Canyon Middle School located at 9555 Huakai Road in Waimea.
