King Charles Says U.K.’s Role in Slave Trade ‘Fills My Heart With Horror’
New York Times World reports: The monarch called Britain’s trafficking of slaves from Africa a “shameful chapter of history” at a meeting of Commonwealth heads of government in Antigua. King Charles III on Tuesday expressed “profound personal sorrow” and “horror” over Britain’s role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, telling leaders of the country’s former colonies that the consequences of that dark history still “resonate with contemporary force.” As expected, the king did not offer a formal apology for Britain’s trafficking of millions of slaves from Africa in the 1700s and 1800s.
