Tropical Storm Lowell is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves westward toward the Central Pacific, with forecasters projecting the storm will pass south of the Hawaiian Islands later this week. Sunday, Lowell was located about 900 miles east-southeast of Hilo and had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph with higher gusts, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center. Lowell was moving west at 12 mph and is expected to continue generally westward over the next two to three days before gradually turning toward the west-northwest later this week.

Two people on Hawaii island were killed during the storm, while homes were washed away, roofs were torn from buildings and trees fell onto homes, vehicles and other property. The storm’s impacts were especially severe in communities in the Kau District, where residents faced flooding, power outages, damaged roads and homes and widespread debris.
