Editor’s note: This story contains graphic descriptions of violence. A Portland man has been convicted of murdering his 81-year-old wife at their home in January of 2025. A jury convicted Joseph Anthony Scrofne, 83, of premeditated first-degree murder. Scrofne was automatically sentenced to life in prison. The 83-year-old admitted to police that he smothered his wife with a pillow and then, after she began to struggle, grabbed a rope and strangled her.
