A 47-year-old man has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl who was riding in her family’s car in northwest Harris County. “Our hearts are shattered”: Family asks for help to lay Zah’Layah to rest Jeremy Porter is accused of opening fire on the vehicle near Grant Road and Jones Road at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Zah’Layah was struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Two other children in the car were injured by shattered glass.

According to court documents released Monday, Porter admitted shooting at the vehicle because he believed the occupants had shot at him and were driving erratically.
