Man dies after stabbing himself, getting tased by police in SE Portland; investigation underway

Police on Wednesday night tased a man who had stabbed himself in Southeast Portland, and the man died shortly after the altercation, authorities said. Officers from the Enhanced Crisis Intervention team, responding to a report that a man was cutting himself, arrived at a home in the 7800 block of Southeast Tolman Street at about 6p.m. to find the man behind a makeshift barricade and stabbing himself, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement. The team “made a plan to try to take the man into custody on a police-officer hold and get him medical attention, but the man refused to come outside,” police said. Ultimately, at least one officer used a Taser on the man, and the man was taken into custody. Emergency responders rushed the man to a hospital, but he died in the ambulance, police said.
