Man who shot and killed Warm Springs officer punched him during arrest days earlier, warrants say

Authorities believed the shooting of 36-year-old Sgt. Chris Fisher was targeted, and the arrest warrant for 23-year-old Jimmy Steverson from less than a week ago, on Friday August 28, gives some insight into their only known prior interaction. Steverson, who was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday in South Carolina and later died, was taken into custody last Friday around 1 a.m.

According to the warrants, that last charge came about when Steverson "did with a closed fist swing at a law enforcement officer. striking him in the left side of his face." The arrest was initiated at a Marathon gas station, where Steverson was found with 34.6 grams of marijuana in two small plastic bags as well as "AR style rifles." Steverson bonded out on the charges before the shooting just before midnight Tuesday night. Possession of a firearm or knife during the commission/attempt of certain crimes and willful obstruction of law enforcement officers by use of threats or violence.
