Marcano 'thankful' for opportunity with RedHawks after MLB ban for gambling

FARGO — Tucupita Marcano signed with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks last October, but didn't make his season debut until Friday, July 31, at Newman Outdoor Field. Marcano, from Venezuela, recently worked through Visa issues to be allowed to get into the U.S. and play for the RedHawks. Two years ago, Marcano was permanently banned from Major League Baseball after violating the league's gambling policy. He's grateful for another chance. “I’m very thankful for the opportunity after all the problems happen," Marcano said Friday through a translator. “I will be ready for any opportunity.” Marcano batted sixth for the RedHawks on Friday against Sioux City as F-M's designated hitter. Thom said Marcano has gone through counseling and other players on the F-M roster vouched for Marcano. “He’s an amazing teammate," said RedHawks catcher Juan Fernandez, also from Venezuela. "I’m really happy that he’s here now.” The RedHawks started in the Northern League in 1996 and later joined the American Association.
