Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield declared a local state of emergency for part of the city’s lower east side following a tornado that caused widespread damage Thursday. Sheffield signed an executive order Friday (Sept. 4) that gives the city broader authority to mobilize local resources for cleanup and to support residents in the hardest-hit area. The emergency area is bounded by Sylvester Street to the north, East Jefferson Avenue to the south, Chene Street to the west and McClellan Street to the east. Belle Isle is also included in the declaration after sustaining significant damage .
