Michigan football QB Bryce Underwood receives message from HC Kyle Whittingham after lackluster opener

Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham isn’t ready to make a change at quarterback after a shaky season opener from Bryce Underwood , but he made clear that the sophomore’s starting job isn’t guaranteed indefinitely. “He’s our QB right now,” Whittingham said on Monday (Sept. 7), while emphasizing that no position on the team is “absolutely set in concrete.” Whittingham’s comments came two days after Michigan escaped Western Michigan 13-12 on a controversial Hail Mary touchdown, despite an offense that struggled throughout much of the game. Whittingham stressed that context while defending his quarterback and rejecting the idea of panicking after one game. Underwood’s job, however, is not immune from competition. “There does come a time for everybody at some point where you got to look at maybe an alternative if you’re not getting what you need,” Whittingham said. Whittingham also said there is no specific timeline for determining when a quarterback has had enough time to settle in before a potential change.
