Matthew Donovan, a quarterback for Mayville State University, was injured during the third quarter of Saturday's game against Simpson University. According to Mayville State, Donovan was airlifted to the hospital, where he underwent brain surgery lasting more than two hours.

Donovan's injury comes less than a month after 17-year-old Adam Massman, a Wisconsin high school football player, died after being injured during a game in August. The CDC says tackling accounts for nearly two-thirds of concussions in high school football.
