Mother and 6-year-old child killed in apartment fire

MARINGOUIN, La. ( WAFB /Gray News) - A mother and a child died in an apartment fire on Monday morning, Louisiana authorities said. The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Lauren Carter, 22, and Layton Carter, 6. Emergency officials responded to reports of a fire at the Ridgewood Apartments in Maringouin around 6:30 a.m. Maringouin Fire Chief Stanley Washington said a neighbor helped the mother escape the apartment, but she died of her injuries at the scene. The child was found dead upstairs.
