Nevada insurance officials say some policies may cover wildfire evacuation costs
As the Bug and Stallion fires continue to burn across northern Nevada, thousands of residents remain under evacuation warnings or orders , and the costs of leaving home can add up quickly. The Nevada Division of Insurance said some insurance policies may help offset certain expenses for residents who are under official evacuation orders. Nevada Insurance Commissioner Ned Gaines said “additional living expenses” coverage can apply to costs that go beyond what people would normally spend. “If you need to buy food, have to go and eat out, if you have a need to get a hotel, any kind of additional gas above and beyond what you would normally buy,” Gaines said. “Is what the additional living expenses cover.” Because coverage varies, Gaines urged consumers to review their policies carefully to understand what is and is not covered. Gaines said the request is not limited to homeowners insurance. “And we’re not looking for it for just the homeowners policy. We’re asking, you know, people have autos.
