Jeff Landry's office announced Monday that an act, which took effect on Aug. 1, makes marijuana possession in school zones punishable by prison time. The law allows a person convicted of possessing marijuana in a school zone to face up to one year in prison, with or without hard labor, and a fine of up to $1,000, in addition to imprisonment. The penalties apply to marijuana possession on school property, within 2,000 feet of school property and on a school bus serving public or private elementary, middle or high schools. The law applies to more than smoking marijuana.
