North Stonington community raises funds for family of 11-year-old killed in bus crash

WESTERLY, R.I. (WJAR) — The North Stonington community is rallying behind the family of a boy who was hit and killed by a school bus Wednesday. As the family of 11-year-old Torren O’Grady grapples with the unimaginable loss, teachers, classmates and neighbors showed up in droves to Del's Lemonade in Westerly for a fundraiser in their honor. Marissa Bergel, a first grade teacher, said she wasn't surprised to see such a large crowd waiting in line Friday afternoon. "This is what North Stonington is all about," Bergel said. "When someone needs support, we give it to them no matter what." O'Grady was hit by a school bus while riding his bicycle on the first day of school Wednesday morning. Connecticut State Police said both the bus and the bike were traveling east on Old Colony Road when the bus turned on to Pinecrest Road and ran him over.
