HOLYOKE — Years of sharing Afro-Puerto Rican traditions through music, dance and education have earned Bomba de Aquí a major honor. The organization was one of two selected as Massachusetts Storyteller of the Year this year, an award bestowed by Mass Humanities. It will be recognized during an Oct. Bomba de Aquí, led by married co-founders Brenda Cepeda and Saul Peñalosa, was chosen for its work combining bomba and plena music, dance, education and storytelling to bring Puerto Rican history and culture to life. In a recent interview with The Republican, Cepeda said the honor carries special meaning because bomba is a tradition rooted in preserving history and sharing lived experiences. “Bomba is about telling stories,” she said.
